Proton Pump Inhibitors and SIBO Risk
PPIs and related meds can increase the risk of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
PPIs and SIBO
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed for acid reflux. By reducing stomach acid, they remove a key defense mechanism against bacterial overgrowth.
Mechanism
Stomach acid (HCL) acts as a barrier, killing bacteria before they can enter the small intestine. Long-term suppression of acid allows bacteria to survive and colonize the small intestine, leading to SIBO.
