PPIs and SIBO

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed for acid reflux. By reducing stomach acid, they remove a key defense mechanism against bacterial overgrowth.

Mechanism

Stomach acid (HCL) acts as a barrier, killing bacteria before they can enter the small intestine. Long-term suppression of acid allows bacteria to survive and colonize the small intestine, leading to SIBO.
